Today, Thursday 1 March in Catania, the Italy national futsal team will face at 20.30 the penultimate round of the FIFA Futsal World Cup 2024 qualifying Main Round against the North Macedonia. Massimiliano Bellarte’s team is currently leading their group with 4 points.
The selection of the Bel Paese commands ahead of Sweden (3) and the Macedonian selection (1). To qualify for the Elite Round it is necessary to finish first in your group, or be among the four best runners-up of the 12 groups: the 8 worst runners-up, however, will be called to play a play-off. For this reason, the challenge against the Macedonians assumes great importance.
There are three precedents with the Balkan selection: the first dates back to 2004, in a qualifying match for the 2005 European Championships, won by the Azzurri 5-0; the second a 6-1 at the PalaFlorio in Bari in the 2016 World Cup qualifiers; the last one last October, the 3-3 draw in the first match of this Main Round, which made life a bit complicated for Bellarte’s men.
