Alejandro Gomezsports director of UCAM Murcia, has appeared at a press conference to talk about the imminent Basketball Champions League tie that will face Unicaja Málaga.
The Murcian leader has spoken about the reasons that have led Unicaja to play this competition and about the interest, in his opinion, that the BCL has in Unicaja reaching the Final Four. These have been his words:
«Before the draw I already had the feeling that they were going to touch us (Unicaja Málaga). Since I saw the last quarter in Athens… If the Basketball Champions League is characterized by something, it is by the home arbitrations and the last quarter of Malaga is to understand some things. I already said it the last time that there are levels in the Champions League and Unicaja, just like Tenerife, are in the first level. The competition itself at times proves it and escapes them in some forums. Teams like us or Rio Breogán or BAXI Manresa are less interesting.
I think that an important sponsor of the Basketball Champions League is Andalucía, I also think that the BCL has negotiated that if Málaga qualifies, they put the money from the canon, which is a very important amount to hold the Final Four there.
We are not playing on equal terms in that competition. Knowing your etiquette within the competition that everyone looks at you as someone inferior, that you are not interested and a place, Murcia, that when the Champions League comes and sees that we do not have a video scoreboard and with a field, what about… when the competition is so interested in a team qualifying And on top of that, he is so superior because the one who is inferior, which is us, only has one option: to motivate himself more. Now we will try to come out as motivated as possible against all that adversity that I have just told you about because we have many things against us. This is basketball and we will have to fight everything and accept everything. What we are not going to do, at least on my part, is not say it. I would have hit the draw before celebrating it and I’m not a fortune teller.
Why didn’t the Basketball Champions League accept 6 Spanish teams last year and this year it did?
