Dhe high-flyers of FC St. Pauli have continued their impressive streak of success with a great away win and can now even dream of promotion to the Bundesliga.
The Hamburgers won on the 25th match day of the 2nd division 5:0 (4:0) at bottom SV Sandhausen. This means that St. Pauli is only eight points behind their city rivals Hamburger SV, who are currently weakening in third place.
Jackson Irvine (45th + 3/88th), Manolis Saliakas (19th), Lukas Daschner (24th) and Oladapo Afolayan (25th) scored for the “Kiezkicker”, who directed the eighth three in the eighth game brought by coach Fabian Hürzeler.
On the other hand, Sandhausen is staggering towards relegation after the seventh game in a row without a win. To make matters worse, Alexander Esswein saw the red card in injury time in the first half for a foul play (45+1).
In front of 7642 spectators in the Hardtwald stadium, the SVS was literally torn apart by the guests in the first 25 minutes. The Hamburg offensive played cat and mouse with the completely overwhelmed defense of the Kurpfälzer. Immediately after Esswein was sent off, Irvine increased the result before the break.
At the beginning of the second half, Hamburg missed numerous chances for further goals. After that, St. Pauli only managed the lead – more goals for the guests were still possible.
Ujah throws firecrackers off the field
The Lower Saxony derby between Eintracht Braunschweig and Hannover 96 had to be interrupted twice in the first half. The reason for this was flares, which were thrown onto the pitch from the Hannoveraner (8th minute) and once from the Braunschweig fan block (40th minute). In one scene, Eintracht striker Anthony Ujah picked up a firecracker that was still burning and threw it off the pitch.

Eintracht Braunschweig won the game at the last minute. With a goal by Jannis Nikolaou in added time, the relegation candidate deservedly defeated their arch-rival from Lower Saxony 1-0 (0-0). In front of 20,995 spectators, Braunschweig missed several clear chances beforehand. Due to these defeats, the weak 96ers remain without a win in the new year.
Rostock continues to slide
For Hansa Rostock, however, the situation in the table basement of the 2nd division will become more and more precarious due to the next home bankruptcy. After a 2:5 (0:3) against Fortuna Düsseldorf, Hansa slipped into the relegation zone for the first time this season. Fortuna (42 points), on the other hand, as the first pursuer of the top trio, can continue to dream of returning to the Bundesliga.
Dawid Kownacki (12th), Rouwen Hennings (20th), Matthias Zimmermann (41st/48th) and Christoph Klarer (82nd) scored for the Rhinelanders, who passed SC Paderborn. The Rostockers, for whom Kai Pröger (57th) and Kevin Schumacher (78th) scored too late, have to worry more and more about staying in the class after only one win in the new year as they are penultimate in the table.
