Simon Lazenby: “If Ferrari has an advantage over Mercedes, I will not rule out a transfer to Hamilton”

According to Sky Sports F1 reporter Simon Lazenby, Lewis Hamilton’s future could well lie with Ferrari. The Brit points to Mercedes’ downward spiral and although Hamilton is still chasing his eighth title, it is now doubtful whether this will be achieved at Mercedes.

The 38-year-old Hamilton started his tenth year at Mercedes in 2023. After the disappointing 2022, Hamilton had hoped for a better 2023. However, the start of the season shows that there is still a lot of work to be done for the team from Brackley. The Briton’s contract expires at the end of the current season and negotiations on a new agreement have been parked for the time being.

Transfer to Ferrari?

Hamilton has previously made it clear that all that matters is winning the eighth world title. It looks like Mercedes will not be at the level to compete for that in the foreseeable future. A switch to Red Bull Racing seems unlikely and at Aston Martin Fernando Alonso probably prefers not to see his eternal rival join. Lazenby tells the British medium that Ferrari may be the best option for Hamilton. “Lewis has been quoted in the past as wanting to drive for Ferrari. If Ferrari has a comfortable lead over Mercedes I wouldn’t rule it out,” he explained.

Duet from Ferrari

Charles Leclerc currently has a contract that links him to the team from Maranello until the end of 2025, so it must be Carlos Sainz’s seat. The Spaniard’s contract runs until the end of 2024 and he seems to be the ideal man alongside the Monegask. That Hamilton may be open to an adventure in the red, of course, does not mean that Ferrari also wants to think about this. For the time being, the Briton will have to do everything he can to get the W14 up and running, because a switch is not always a guarantee of success.
