Nfter Augsburg’s home win over SV Werder Bremen there was trouble again with Rafal Gikiewicz. After FC Augsburg’s 2-1 win in the Bundesliga, the hot-headed goalkeeper took on guest fans and individual Bremen pros. The 35-year-old provoked the Werder supporters in the block diagonally behind his goal with gestures. The Pole stuck his index finger behind his ear. He also mocked some Werder players.
“Sometimes it gets on my nerves how they write to me on Twitter or Instagram and insult me and my family,” Gikiewicz explained his behavior on the Sky microphone after the game.
The tension between Bremen and Gikiewicz has existed since the first leg. When Augsburg made it 1-0, the goalkeeper saved a penalty, but before that he unsportsmanlikely footed the penalty spot. He then took on the Werder fans. It almost came to a square storm. When they met again in Augsburg, the Werder supporters whistled at Gikiewicz.
“It was the same as in the first leg,” remarked annoyed Bremen captain Marco Friedl. He described Gikiewicz’s behavior as childish. “He likes doing the show,” said teammate Mitchell Weiser. Augsburg manager Stefan Reuter separated the goalkeeper on the pitch from the Bremen players. “It’s important that he doesn’t let himself be provoked,” said Reuter on Sky.
Meanwhile, Gikiewicz threatened to take action if there were more social media posts against his family. “Against me, I can always discuss that. I also answer the people from Bremen,” he said excitedly: “But in the direction of my family, that’s too much. If that happens again after the game, some people just get a letter.”
