Pork industry in Mexico has a production of 1.7 million tons per year: Sader – El Sol de México

He also pointed out that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) ensures the proper functioning of public goods such as the health, research and transfer of technology as well as the opening of new markets internationally and makes them available to the different production chains, such as pork.

According to the secretary, these investments translate into increase in productivity and competitiveness for the good of the different regions and their inhabitants.

He also highlighted the relaunch of the Mexican Institute of Pig Farming (IMP), whose mission is to serve the sector, promote scientific and technological research and bring it closer to small and medium producers.

In turn, the president of the Organization of Mexican Pig Farmers (Opormex), Heriberto Hernández Cárdenas, stated that the sector is synonymous with unity and responsibility since all producers are committed to health, safety and agri-food sustainability.

He also spoke about Opormex’s collaboration with the National Service of Health, Safety and Food Quality (Senasica), to reduce the risk of introduction into national territory of the over the African pig (PPA), through canine pairings in ports, airports and borders.

He stressed that given the challenges imposed by the global environment, these public-private alliances are relevant in order to jointly address the challenges of the sector through collaboration agreements, taking care of the health and the environment and the development of a circular economy.

The president of the IMP, María Elena Trujillo, assured that the relaunch of the Institute, reported that since 2021 the scientific link with pig farmers, to guarantee food security in the country.

He expressed that there is a great opportunity for the growth of this industry to continue. At the moment per-capita consumption is 20 kilograms per year. In the United States it is 30 kilograms and in Asia it exceeds 40 kilograms.
