Palmeiras players lose BRL 11 million in cryptocurrency scam and go to court

The player Mayke, who plays on the right side of Palmeiras, and the club’s former midfielder, Gustavo Scarpa, now join the thousands of victims of companies that promise high yields in cryptocurrencies, but which are a scam.

According to website information ESPN this Friday (10), the two athletes sought the Justice of São Paulo to try to recover about R$ 11 million in investments made last year in a brokerage called WLJC Gestão Financeira.

The case also draws attention to another piece of information: one of the owners of the WLJC is also a Brazilian soccer player. According to ESPN, this is striker Willian ‘Bigode’, who currently wears the shirt of the Rio tricolor, Fluminense Football Club.

According to the publication, Willian would have already given testimony to the police and informed that he was also a victim, as he would have lost about R$ 16 million in the business.

The broker promised returns of 3.5% to 5% per month on investments using cryptocurrencies. However, when customers tried to redeem their funds, they were unsuccessful. The athletes are now suing both the WLJC and other parties involved, asking for reimbursement of the amounts that, according to the file, should have been settled between August and October 2022.

Proceedings are in the Justice of São Paulo

As detailed by the report, which had access to the processes, Scarpa asks the court to return BRL 6.3 million while Mayke requires BRL 4.5 million. The lawsuits, which run respectively in the 10th and 14th Civil Court of São Paulo, are against three companies: WLJC; Xland; and Eireli Technology Solutions. Complaints range from non-compliance with payments to lack of information.

The defense of the players calls for the blocking of amounts in the bank accounts and cryptocurrency brokerage accounts of the aforementioned companies, as well as the seizure of property and real estate “subject to attachment”, in order to “protect full compliance with the amounts due”, describes the publication.

ESPN also found that Scarpa and Mayke were not the only athletes affected by the blow and that other players are also affected, but they have not yet decided to go to court.
