Otmar Szafnauer can’t enjoy Alonso’s departure yet: “The question remains his age”

Alpine team boss Otmar Szafnauer does not seem to be over the departure of Fernando Alonso. Although the Romanian American does not doubt the two-time champion’s motivation, he does point to Alonso’s age and says that this could break him up.

The Alpine team boss appreciated Alonso’s performance in Bahrain. The Spaniard seems to have started his second life in Formula 1, with the podium in Bahrain. Szafnauer saw Alonso excel at his team last season, but now believes that the age of the Spaniard may take its toll.

Motivation is there

“I don’t know, since he’s been there I can only see what I see from the outside. I think he’s still very motivated, he lives for this, so I think Fernando’s motivation is definitely still there. Lance [Stroll] got injured from what I heard, and it looks like Fernando, from what you see on the screen, was fighting hard for positions.”

‘Age overtakes us all’

The Aston Martin driver is the oldest driver in the field at 41 and his former team boss believes Alonso could suffer at any time. “So I’m sure he’s motivated, the question will be age, which will overtake us all, I have no idea when or if that’s going to happen,” said Szafnauer.
