“Ogre” follows the example of “Liepāja” and defeats the Estonian champion

The “Ogres” team defeated the northern neighbor champions “Parnu Sadam” today in the “Pafbet” Latvian-Estonian Basketball League (LIBL) match. The match in Ogre ended with a score of 81:68 (10:20, 23:19, 22:15, 26:14) in favor of the home team.

Kristaps Dărgais was the most productive player for the Ogres – he had seven points, ten rebounds, seven assists and four steals. William Talton was the top scorer with 18 points, while Rihards Zöbergs and Edgars Lasenbergs scored 13 each. Matthew McCarthy and Aiziya Hart each scored 17 points for the guests.

Ogre basketball players with a balance of 17-12 occupy the sixth position in the tournament table, while last year’s players, with 12 victories in 28 games, are in ninth place in the competition of 16 teams. On the other hand, “Latvijas Universität” experienced a loss at home, which recognized the superiority of the regular tournament winner Slobožanska “Prometey” with 57:83 (19:17, 14:15, 16:25, 8:26). Richards Vitolskis scored 12 points in the LU unit, while Ivan Tkachenko had 14 points for the winners.

LU has won nine successes in 28 games and is in 13th place in the tournament table, while “Prometey” is in first place in the tournament table with 28 victories in 29 games.

Latvia is represented in the tournament by six teams – “VEF Rīga”, “Ventspils”, “Ogre”, “University of Latvia”, “Valmiera Glass”/”Vidzemes Augstskola” and “Liepāja”. Estonia is represented by nine teams – “Parnu Sadam”, “University of Tartu”/”Maks & Moorits”, Tallinn “Kalev”/”Cramo”, Tallinn “TalTech”, Rapla “Avis Utilitas”, Rakvere “Tarvas”, Tallinn ” Kalev”/”Audentes”, “Viimsi” and newcomer “Keila”. Also, the Ukrainian team “Prometey” of Slobojansk competes in the tournament. The Ukrainian team is participating in the LIBL competition for the first time.

The best men’s basketball clubs of Latvia and Estonia played in a joint championship for the first time in the 2019 season, when 15 teams participated. In the “Final 4” tournament, “Ventspils” basketball players became the first winners of the league. Last year, the basketball players of “VEF Rīga” were crowned LIBL champions, who beat “Viimsi” in the decisive match, while “Parnu Sadam” won the bronze.
