New interested parties for the Winter Games from 2030

In its search for hosts for future Winter Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) draws hope. “There are new prospects. A number of parties came to the table, ”said Olympic Director Christophe Dubi on Wednesday after deliberations by the IOC leadership.

The IOC top official said that more than six cities and regions had shown interest in hosting the Winter Games from 2030 onwards. Dubi did not want to give any details about the alleged applicants.

Because of climate change, the high costs and various scandals surrounding the awarding of the Olympics in the past, the IOC has recently had trouble finding hosts for the Winter Games. The awarding of the 2030 Winter Olympics, which was actually planned for this year, has been postponed.

Salt Lake City is considered a safe candidate

Salt Lake City is considered a safe candidate. The Americans actually only want to host the 2034 games, since the USA will already host the summer games in Los Angeles in 2028. Japan’s Sapporo has put its efforts on hold amid anger over corruption at the 2021 Tokyo Games.

Canada’s Olympic plans in Vancouver currently lack regional political support. Talks are to be held there again in the next few weeks, said Dubi. In addition, Sweden wants to examine its Olympic chances as part of a feasibility study.

Rotation system is discussed

According to Dubi, there is “no time pressure” when looking for other winter hosts. It is also possible to award the 2030 and 2034 games twice. In addition, the IOC is discussing a rotation system with a few fixed winter organizers for the future, which will guarantee fair conditions in the long term despite global warming. In 2026 the Winter Games will take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy).
