Mexican and Cuban win medals in Tashkent Judo Grand Slam

Awiti only yielded in the final to the Japanese Megumi Horikawa, Tashkent 2022 world champion, by ippon to achieve the best performance in Latin America so far in the contest.

The bronze medals of the category corresponded to the Romanian Florentina Ivanescu and the Hungarian Szofi Ozbas.

For Latin America, the Cuban Maylín del Toro finished in seventh position after losing in the repechage against Ivanescu due to a third shido that decreed the hansoku-make, sanctioned when there were barely nine seconds left to complete the combat time.

For his part, Estrada surpassed the Uzbek Shakhram Ahadov by ippon in the dispute for one of the two third places of the 73 kilos (kg).

This award, the first for Estrada since the silver medal reached at the Zagreb Grand Prix in July 2022, improves the fifth place obtained a couple of weeks ago at the Tel Aviv Grand Slam.

The division title fell to Uzbek Murodjon Yuldoshev, who advantaged in the gold discussion to Kazakh Daniyar Shamshayev by wazari.

The other bronze medal of the weight was obtained by the Swiss Nils Stump by beating the Spanish Salvador Cases by wazari.

In the final of the 81 kg, the Hungarian Attila Ungvari defeated the Austrian Shamil Borchashvili, third place Olympian of Tokyo 2020, by wazari and conquered his second crown in a Grand Slam.

Tajik Somon Majmadbekov and Uzbek Muso Sobirov got the bronze medals in the category.

The Croatian Barbara Matic, current holder of the world title, fell to the Austrian Michaela Polleres in the final of the 70 kg wazari, while the Uzbek Gulnoza Matniyazova and the Swedish Anna Bernholm finished in third place.

Japan leads the competition with two gold medals and is followed by Uzbekistan, Austria, Hungary, Germany, Tajikistan, South Korea and Serbia, all with one title.
