Kicker Robbie Gould seeks a new destination. Should Dallas go for him?

In the midst of free agency, there are always notes or players that garner widespread attention within the NFL. In some cases, these are positions that may not be in the spotlight, but are essential for the positive results of the teams. That is the case of the kickers, who stand out according to their current status with the franchises. Although there are specific cases that remain constant and make a name for themselves within the league.

That is the particular case of Robbie Gould, who already has 18 seasons in the NFL, of which the last six of them have been part of the San Francisco 49ers roster. However, the player would be looking for a new destination and he already told the Californian team a few weeks ago that he would be testing free agency. And right now, the kicker has no contract with any team. In fact, San Francisco just a few hours ago traded with the Panthers for Zane Gonzalez. So it’s unlikely that Gould will return to the NFC West team any longer.

Although Gould is already 40 years old, it is not seen among his decisions that he is going to retire from the league. In fact, his numbers have remained constant since he began his professional career. Robbie would come to the Chicago Bears as an undrafted agent in the 2005 Draft, and from then on his stats are practically perfect. He participating in 120 regular season games, making 447 field goals out of 517 attempts. Along with this, his longest field goal was in 2013 with the Bears in the 2013 season. And in the extra point section, he has achieved 620 of them out of a total of 636.

Of course, one should also not forget the fact that Gould has been a nightmare for the Cowboys these past few years in the postseason. In both the 2021 wild card round and the following season’s divisional round, his results have been perfect. He getting to have seven field goals in seven attempts and all three extra points in his three chances. And if we talk about the postseason in general, participating in 16 games he has made all his field goal attempts (29) and all his extra points (39).

“I usually play upset,” Gould said after the 49ers’ victory over Dallas in the divisional round a few months ago. “It is who I am, I try to find something that bothers me. But I always try to find something during the week that leads me to it. And a Super Bowl ring is what I want. I lack that in my career.”

It should be noted that his only bad season, so to speak, had a percentage of 74% achievement in his field goal attempts in 2019. And this could be considered his “bad year”, since in his entire career he averages 86.5 % in efficiency during this activity.

Gould is being talked about precisely because of the current situation of the Cowboys in regards to the position. Brett Maher could be seen in an excellent way during the regular season of the lone star team. However, his inconsistency in the playoffs ended up taking its toll on him in the offices. In the wild card round clash against Tampa Bay, he would miss four of five extra point attempts. And to make things a little more complicated, he would end up getting another extra-point attempt blocked in the divisional round against the 49ers.

Already for the first of February of this year, it would be the same Jerry Jones who affirmed that the team would have a game plan without Maher. Consequently, it is not believed that Brett will have a place in the team in 2023, while he is still a free agent.

The only kicker the Cowboys have right now is Tristan Vizcaino. He would come to the Cowboys for the second time after a brief stint in the first months of 2020, and would end up signing again on February 22 of this year. So if Vizcaino wants to make the Vaqueros’ official roster, he’ll have to prove himself not just in organized activities but in training camp. And he, too, will have to wait for the element that they bring to the offices to compete for the position. Something very common in the Dallas Cowboys for training in Oxnard.

While it is true that all this is rumours, Robbie Gould arriving at the lone star team would be a great acquisition. Now what remains is to wait to see the movements they can make in the Vaqueros offices and look for a safe competition for Vizcaino, in addition to determining the kicker for the team in 2023.
