Juan Pablo Varillas beat Andrea Pellegrino and classic to the quarterfinals of the Sanremo Challenger | Sports | FULL-SPORTS

John Paul Varillas (No. 88 in the ATP ranking) regained confidence in his best tennis and managed to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Challenger of Sanremo by beating the Italian Andrea Pellegrino (184 °). The Peruvian showed improvement after his participation in the Master 1000 in Miami, where -despite showing a good game- he was prematurely out of competition.

The first racket had one of the highlights of his career weeks ago when he reached his first semifinals at the ATP level in Buenos Aires, defeating great rivals like Dominic Thiem and Lorenzo Musetti on the way.

Thus, this week, for the first time since January, he returned to the Challenger Tour, a circuit where he has achieved his best results: five titles, the last of which was in San Leopoldo 2022, and four finals (in Campinas last season).

To start with, the 27-year-old tennis player took the premiere over Federico Arnaboldi in straight sets. Then it was the turn of another Italian: Andrea Pellegrino, with whom he had to battle a little more.

It cost, but achieved another victory for Peru

Juan Pablo needed one hour and 47 minutes to beat the local Pellegrino. With the good start that he had in the game, the Peruvian was able to win the first set with a difference of one break.

However, in the second set the local tennis player was better and prevailed by a resounding 6-1 over the Peruvian, but Varillas recovered for the third set and won 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals.

Now, for the pass to the final, he will face one of the locals again: Andrea Vavassori (202nd). It should be noted that in the clash history the Italian has a 2-1 advantage over the Peruvian, the most recent victory being Juan Pablo’s in the first round of qualifying Gstaad (Switzerland) in 2022 by 6-4 and 7 -6(3).
