Tommy Haas, once number two in the tennis world, is now tournament director in Indian Wells. He talks about the humorous Russian Medvedev, Zverev’s comeback – and Grand Slam titles, which others will probably win first.

Tommy Haas looks worriedly at his cell phone. No, not an emergency, he’s just not sure if his phone really saved that video he just walked into from the sidelines Stadium 1 turned out – a spectacular rally in the semifinals between Daniil Medvedev and Frances Tiafoe. Hamburger Haas, now 44 years old, was once number two in the world rankings, reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in Melbourne three times and one each in Wimbledon and New York. He is now the tournament director of the Masters in Indian Wells, California, which is often referred to as “Fifth Grand Slam Tournament”. The semifinals are still in progress, and Haas tells you what will happen now: “Tiafoe will try a serve and volley because Medvedev is so far behind. But the first volley has to be right, otherwise…”
