In congress, Fifa considers imposing mandatory rest days for footballers

A wind of revolution is blowing through world football! According to information from the newspaper L’Équipe, the FIFA Council, meeting in session from this Tuesday in Rwanda, should put the sensitive subject of calendars on the table for discussion. A long-standing wish on the part of players who complain more and more of the infernal pace with the multiplication of matches between national and international competitions, and the risks to their physical integrity.

The creation of a working group to think about solutions should be announced on Tuesday. The objective would therefore be to protect the health of players by reducing their seasons. One of the first measures could be the introduction of an annual rest period. This working group – made up of representatives of the relevant stakeholders, including FIFPRO, the professional players’ union, as well as technical and medical experts – could thus impose a minimum of 72 hours of rest between two matches and one day mandatory rest each week. A step forward for players who complain about the infernal pace of matches.

The decisions will be applied by the Federations around the world. According to the Team, the initiative received support from all confederations during the consultation process.
