She is enthroned magnificently above everything, Naples is at her feet. At least the statue of Mary from the Piazza del Gesù has remained intact. It still stands there on top of the Obelisco dell’Immacolata, the structure of the Immaculate Conception, erected in 1747 after a popular preacher’s appeal for donations. Surely that hadn’t been a few hours earlier. Because what was safe in the center of Naples? The smoke has since cleared and the fire has been extinguished. But you can’t just chase away the horror, on this Thursday morning it is still in the eyes of the residents. At most, their words can cover it up, the Neapolitans are known for their black humor.
