Joshua Kimmich talks about the decisions made by national coach Hansi Flick. The Bayern star is surprised.
Joshua Kimmich reacted with surprise to several personnel decisions made by national coach Hansi Flick for the upcoming international matches.
He expected several new players to join the German national team for the games against Peru (on Saturday) and Belgium (Tuesday) – but: “I was rather surprised that one or the other wasn’t there.”
In conversation with the tz The FC Bayern star didn’t want to list all the names, “but Marco (Reus, note), Ilkay (Gündogan), Thomas (Müller), Niki (Süle), Leroy (Sané), Toni (Rüdiger) – just the last ones I would have expected three on the list.”
Flick had dispensed with the top performers mentioned in order to be able to test “possibilities and options in all positions”, as he revealed at a PK on Monday.
Kimmich: Working things out, setting goals
He is in regular contact with the national coach, explained Kimmich: “We spoke two or three times. Hansi spoke to many and exchanged ideas,” said the 28-year-old.
The knowledge from the talks? “This phase will now be very important in order to work through certain things again. But then also to set certain goals for the coming months.”
Because Germany, as host, has already qualified for the EM 2024, the DFB team will only play friendlies until the next major tournament.
“Have to win every single game”
Kimmich, who will lead the squad as captain in Manuel Neuer’s absence, said: “For me, these are not classic test or friendly games. For me, every single game is a preparatory game – and we have to win every single game.”
For the Bayern player, “it’s all about finding the rhythm. That we gain self-confidence in every game – also build a certain continuity.”
