“Simon Mignolet (35) announces his retirement as a Red Devil”: that message from the app of the Belgian Football Association circulated online on Saturday afternoon. Annoying, because the goalkeeper only wanted to officially tie the knot and communicate on Monday.

The message was also dated next Monday (March 13), but can no longer be found. So now we have to wait until Mignolet – the day after the match against Standard – announces something himself. But a farewell means that he is already the third international to recently close the door on the national team. Eden Hazard called it a day just after the World Cup in Qatar, Toby Alderweireld did that at the beginning of this month because he “wants to spend more time with his family and with Antwerp”.

Mignolet has 35 caps and 129 selections for our country on the counter, after making his debut in 2011. The current Golden Boot was there as a reserve goalkeeper behind Thibaut Courtois at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Also at the 2016 European Championships and 2020 he signed present.
