Chief referee FIFA Pierluigi Collina brought up extra time in matches that ended in big scores like before Liverpool silence Manchester United 7-0.

The former Italian referee wants the right application of injury time in every football match.

“Last weekend there were 10 games in the Premier League. Four games added up to 10 minutes or more and the other two could have been more but weren’t given just because the scores were 7-0 and 4-0,” said Collina.

“In the Liverpool match, there were four minutes of added time, one minute in the first half and three minutes in the second half. But there were six goals in the second half,” he continued, quoted from Sky Sports.

The referee who presided over the 2002 World Cup final wanted consistent enforcement of the rules on the field to be enforced after the 2022 World Cup had extended extra time in matches which allowed time to be wasted.

“Maybe in the future we will have a rule that says if the goal difference between the two teams is so great then extra time is not given. But that must become the law of the game first,” explained Collina.

Some of the moments that can waste time include goal celebrations, substitutions, injured players, and players deliberately stalling for time.

Apart from taking the example from the Liverpool vs MU match, Collina is also said to have used the Liverpool vs Real Madrid match in the Champions League which ended in a 5-2 win for Los Blancos as a match that should have received more extra time.
