eliminated Martina Corsini and Judith Mair – OA Sport

The second day of the Yonex German Open 2023 ended a little while ago, fifth tournament of the season on the BWF tour. In Mulheim, Germany, the first round matches of all five draws (individuals, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles) took place today and the show was not lacking.

In the men’s individual tournament the first surprises arrived immediately: the Thai Kunlavut Vitidsarn (seeded n.2) was eliminated, forced to retire 21-15, 7-4 in favor of the Chinese Shi Feng Li, and the Japanese Kodai Naraoka (n.3 of seeding), also forced to abandon the tournament, in this case in the third set on 21-23, 21-14 11-5 in favor of the Hong Kong representative Ka Long Angus. The Malaysian Zii Jia Lee (n.1 of the tournament) and the Singaporean athlete Kean Yes Loh (seeded n.4) go through instead.

No big twist instead in the individual women’s tournament, where all the top four seeded teams made it through to the second round, namely the Japanese Akane Yamaguchi (n.1), the Korean Se Young An (n.2), the Chinese Yu Fei Chen (n.3) and the Chinese Bing Jiao He (n.4).

In men’s doubles the Japanese Takuro Hogi/Yugo Kobayashi (pair no.2 of the seeding) and the Danes Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen (n.4 of the tournament) won on their debut and progressed to the round of 16. Instead, they benefited from a bye in the first round Aaron Chia/Wooi Yik Soh (seeding No.1), who therefore advanced without difficulty, while the Chinese Yu Chen Liu/Xuan Yi Ou (seeded n.3), defeated by the Koreans Min Hyuk Kang with a double 21-19.

In women’s doubles all the top four seeded pairs qualified for the second round, namely Nami Matsuyama/Chibaru Shida (1, Japan), Na Eun Jeong/Hye Jeong Kim (2, South Korea), Pearly Tan/Muralitharan Thinaah ( 3, Malaysia) and So Yeong Kim/Hee Yong Kong (4, South Korea). Nothing to do instead for the Italians Martina Corsini and Judith Mair, defeated by the Japanese Rui Hirokami and Yuna Kato 2-0 (21-12, 21-15).

In the end, in mixed doubles the last four matches valid for the first round were played and the Chinese Yan Zhe Feng/Dong Ping Huang (seeded n.5), the Koreans Seung Jae Seo/Yu Jung Chae (n. 6 of the seeding), the Japanese Hiroki Midorikawa/Natsu Saito and the Indonesians Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti.
