Daniil Medvedev reconciles with Indian Wells court after final defeat: “We had a toxic relationship”

Medvedev didn’t have much to say about his defeat against the Indian Wells winner and new world number one Carlos Alcaraz. He also didn’t manage to wrest a single set from the Spaniard in the tournament and apologized to the audience “for not making the final entertaining”.

He quickly made his peace with the game (“I don’t like to lose, but today was pretty easy”), and also with his arch-rival, the Indian Wells court.

In several rants, also against the referees, he had given free rein to his displeasure at the court, which he thought was too slow.

Now he struck up a conciliatory tone, even if he didn’t mean it entirely seriously. “I want to thank the court!” He announced with a big smile during the on-field interview. He had a “pretty toxic relationship with the courts here, a love-hate relationship,” joked the Russian.

“Hopefully I can manage to love the court”

He explained mischievously: “I gave him a rough time, so he gave me a rough time. I twisted my ankle, hurt my thumb… But he gave me the opportunity to finish the tournament.” After another thank you to the court, the 27-year-old promised: “I will definitely come back.”

He loves the tournament and wants to come back for many years, said the fifth in the world rankings and may even have been serious. But he couldn’t resist another joke: “Hopefully I can manage to love this court and Indian Wells at the same time.”
