Combined Indian Wells: Defeats in the first round for Fognini, Paolini and Bronzetti

After a period of more than a month, Ben Shelton he finally managed to rediscover the taste for victory at the BNP Paribas Open tournament, the prestigious Indian Wells Masters 1000. The young US tennis player has stopped Fabio Fognini with a score of 6-4, 6-1 in just 70 minutes in his tournament debut. Now Shelton will face Taylor Fritz, the world No. 5 and first US Top 5 in over a decade, in the second round.

In the first set Shelton showed that he knows how to handle difficult situations well and, despite losing his serve in the first game of the match, he recovered the deficit in the fourth game and erased two consecutive break points from 15-40 in the seventh.
On 4 to 5 Fognini gave up again losing the fraction 6 to 4.

Contrary to the first set, Fognini was the first to lose his serve in the second set. The blue, who only got 35% of points when he served second, lost his serve in the first innings of the second set. Fognini went down 0-40, he canceled the first two break points but on the third occasion he slammed into the American’s defense. Shelton then took total control of the match and won shortly after set and match 6 to 1.

Jasmin Paolinicurrently number 63 in the WTA rankings, played her first match at the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells against the German Tatjana Maria, which is positioned at number 70 in the world ranking. Despite the two players having an equal balance of wins and losses in their previous matches, Paolini was unable to pass the first round, losing the match with a score of 7-5, 6-1.

The winner, Tatjana Maria, will now have to contend in the second round with the Russian Daria Kasatkina, who currently ranks eighth in the WTA rankings and seeding, and who reached the final of the tournament in 2018.

Also Lucia Bronzetti, who occupies the number 71 position in the WTA ranking, played her first match of the tournament against the American Bernarda Pera, who is positioned at number 43 in the ranking. The two players had an equal balance of victories and defeats in their previous meetings, but Bronzetti was defeated after a very even game, with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. In the third set, Bronzetti suffered a three-game run after hooking the American at 3-all, which led to her elimination from the tournament.

The winner of this match, Bernarda Pera, will face the Russian Liudmila Samsonova in the second round, who is currently in twelfth position in the WTA ranking and seeding.
