Champions League, magnificent goals in the quarters

Does the draw for the Champions League semi-finals take place at the same time?

Yes. For the draw of the semi-finals, four balls containing the messages “Winner of the quarter-final 1” to “Winner of the quarter-final 4” are placed and shuffled in a large central bowl. The first team drawn plays its quarter-final first leg at home, against the second team drawn. The procedure is repeated with the other balls to determine the two semi-finals.

Then a third draw determines the so-called “home” team in the final for administrative reasons.

When are the Champions League quarter-finals?

The first legs will take place on Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 April, with the return matches being scheduled for 18 and 19 April. The semi-finals will take place on 9/10 and 16/17 May, while the final will be played on Saturday 10 June.

Stadium and city conflicts

In accordance with a decision received from the competent local authorities and confirmed by the Italian national association, AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano, who share the same stadium for their home matches, cannot play at home on the same evening or at 24 hours apart.

As is the case each season when establishing the calendar after the draw of all competitions, Paragraph 23.02 of the Competition Regulations (currently for the 21/24 cycle) and the associated principles set out by the Competitions Commission Interclub determines the procedure for resolving stadium or city disputes. In this case, if the two clubs are drawn in the same sequence (first leg or home leg), AC Milan, as national champions, will have priority, regardless of the opponent of each team.

That’s why the AC Milan match will not be reversed.

The full quarter-final schedule will be available after the draw ceremony no later than 6 p.m. CET.

Does the away goals rule still exist during the knockout stage?

No. The away goals rule was abolished at the start of the 2021/22 season. If two teams are tied at the end of the second leg, we will be entitled to extra time followed by a possible penalty shoot-out.
