BVB is fighting Leipzig for first place in front of 80,000 fans. If the spectators make it to the stadium. Before the game there is a threat of traffic collapse in Dortmund, public transport is at a standstill. A “maximum of patience” is required.
Borrussia Dortmund is the team of the moment. BVB has won its last nine competitive games and is only second in the table behind FC Bayern Munich because of the worse goal difference. The top game against RB Leipzig on Friday evening (8.30 p.m., DAZN and in the WELT live ticker) is the perfect litmus test for Edin Terzic’s team. Is BVB really ready for the title this season or did the in-form Leipzig team prevail in Dortmund?
“We have to do the tasks against the ball with the force and power that they develop. But we also want to play forward ourselves, we want to give them problems and tasks that are then difficult to solve,” RB coach Marco Rose indicates the direction of his team for the top game.
The people of Leipzig not only have to compete against eleven BVB professionals, but also against more than 80,000 fans. The game in the Dortmund Arena is of course sold out. For BVB, this is actually part of everyday organizational life, but this Friday evening there is a risk of chaos when the fans arrive at the stadium. In Dortmund, public transport is on strike. The all-day warning strike by the service company Ver.di will completely shut down all local transport connections in Dortmund with light rail and buses.
“Unfortunately, there may be traffic situations that demand a great deal of patience from visitors and may force the responsible institutions to make very unpopular decisions at short notice,” said BVB in a statement. The club asks its fans to get to the stadium as early as possible.
Dortmund police appeal to BVB fans
Because the warning strike is not the only obstacle waiting for the many spectators. The climate protection movement “Fridays for Future” has announced a demonstration in the city center. In addition, other events make it difficult to get there. “A motorcycle fair with an estimated 20,000 visitors will take place in the Westfalenhallen on Friday, and comedian Bülent Ceylan will also be appearing in front of around 4,000 visitors in the evening. Two major demonstrations will take place in the city from midday until 6 p.m. The Bundesliga game in Germany’s largest stadium is sold out with 81,365 spectators,” said BVB.
Experience has shown that around 30,000 of the 80,000 fans travel to Borussia games by public transport. The Dortmund police appealed via Twitter to fans to come to the stadium by bike or on foot: “Strike on buses and trains: It’s faster to walk to the stadium than by car. Important additional information: Deutsche Bahn does not use any relief trains that run from Dortmund Central Station to Signal-Iduna-Park!”
