BC baseball star leads Team Canada to World Baseball Classic record

It took just one day for Team Canada to establish themselves as an elite force at the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC), making history as the winner of the highest-scoring game in the WBC history.

BC’s Tyler O’Neill had an impressive performance in the March 12 game, hitting four perfect hits on four at bats.

“It was awesome,” O’Neill said of his team’s performance. “The boys continued the rally today. Lots of good batsmen out there today, lots of good walks, not giving anything away – it was really fun to watch.

Team Canada manager Ernie Whitt was equally proud of the team’s production and the fact that they were part of WBC history.

“There was a lot of attack there,” Whitt said. “We hit the ball extremely well. »

“I would like to score 18 points every game we play. »

Of Team Canada’s 18 points, O’Neill personally scored four – the most of any team member.

A typical outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals, O’Neill spoke about what it meant to him to be able to represent his home country in the sport he loves.

“There is something special about wearing this uniform,” he said.

“I relish the opportunity to put it on whenever I can. They come little and far between now. The last WBC was six years ago and now we’re in 2023 and I don’t know how many more chances I’m going to have to wear Canada on my chest so I’m just trying to make the most of it every time that I can .”

Unfortunately, Team Canada didn’t have the same success in their next game against Team USA, which ended in a 12-1 loss for the Canadians.

But on Tuesday they bounced back and managed to claim a 5-0 victory against the Colombian team, in which O’Neill scored another point for his team.

Team Canada will then face Team Mexico on Wednesday at noon PST.

The 2023 WBC will end on March 21.
