Bayern Munich goalkeeper Yann Sommer has, as promised, made an attempt to deliver Matthijs de Ligt a load of chocolate. The Swiss delicacy, intended to thank the Dutchman for preventing a goal in the Champions League, eventually ended up at the food bank.
De Ligt distinguished himself last week in the return against Paris Saint-Germain in the eighth finals of the Champions League. After Sommer’s fumbling, the Orange international took the ball off the goal line with an utmost effort.
Sommer was full of praise for De Ligt’s defensive action. “I’ve said it a few times, but I put a lorry of Swiss chocolates at his front door. It’s great what he did there,” said the Swiss goalkeeper.
On Thursday, chocolate manufacturer Kägi loaded a truck full of 700 kilograms of chocolate on behalf of Sommer. After a three-hour drive, Bayern Munich threw a spanner in the works.
“Just before we arrived in Munich, Bayern reported that the chocolate could not be delivered. That was a disappointment,” says Miu Nguyen, Kägi’s press officer, in conversation with the Münchner Merkur.

‘We didn’t know what hit us’
Instead of returning to Switzerland, the chocolate manufacturer decided to donate the cargo to the Müncher Tafel. That’s a food bank in Munich.
“We didn’t know what hit us. We only saw that it was from Bayern Munich,” says Steffen Horak, the food bank’s press officer. The chocolate will be distributed among the residents of Munich this week.
Partly due to De Ligt’s nice action, Bayern won the return against PSG 2-0. After the 0-1 win in the first leg, that was more than enough to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The draw is Friday.
