Bamberg: “Extraordinary” leisure activities recognized – these youth groups had the most creative ideas

Whether it’s an extraordinary judo safari, a tent camp on the subject of biodiversity or a punk concert with a lecture on “Punks in the GDR” – the Bamberg youth groups have again come up with a number of ideas in 2022 to offer children and young people great leisure activities in the city to offer. As the city of Bamberg reports, 10 groups have thrown their diverse applications for the Youth Prize 2022 into the ring. As part of the award ceremony in the youth culture club, they presented these creative projects with great persuasiveness to at least 50 enthusiastic guests. The jury – consisting of Stadtjugendring assessor Julia Mari, youth worker Sebastian Wehner and Mayor Wolfgang Metzner – now honored three of them in the youth culture meeting point.

The decision was not easy for this jury. When young people from the Aero Club dare to take to the skies in the Franconian youth comparison flight with the glider pilots, scouts gather on the chain bridge for young people in the Ukraine or children miraculously measure their strength as part of a judo safari, then – like this the SJR managing director Hanne Engert-Alt – all deserved the first prize. The listeners were amazed at the imaginative methods that youth associations and youth leaders use to inspire young people to take part in youth work after a long dry spell during the Corona pandemic.

In the end, the Catholic youth of Our Lady came out on top. The youth organization organized a biodiversity camp last year. 80 girls and boys spent a week creatively dealing with nature conservation. This extraordinary project was supported by the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry in Bamberg. The prize is endowed with 500 euros.

The Bavarian sports youth in the district of Bamberg came in second, which is worth 300. They set up an international youth camp under the motto “Being young in Europe”. With a cultural, sports and educational program, young people were able to experience a Europe without borders. It was the first international youth meeting in the district of Bamberg and around 60 young people took part. Bamberg’s third mayor, Wolfgang Metzner, praised the project as an important building block in creating a foundation for Europe that will continue to stand for peace.

The third prize and thus 200 euros went to the youth group Bamberg Phantoms eV. They started a big awareness-raising campaign for the hospice work in Bamberg and supported the charity run for the benefit of the hospice association. 25 participants took care of the food for the runners or acted as marshals and made sure that traffic was running smoothly.

Hanne Engert-Alt, manager of the Stadtjungendring Bamberg, was once again enthusiastic about the actions of the young people. After all, she is the woman at the Stadtjugendring who, over the years, has made the youth prize what it is today: “It’s unbelievable what the young people got back on their feet last year. Nice to know they are actors within our urban society. We can be proud of that. The youth prize is the tip of the iceberg in the youth work of the city of Bamberg. It sends out a great signal to young people and the public,” says Engert-Alt, who with this last successful event after almost 40 years of youth work for the city youth council and thus also for the city of Bamberg from active work for the youth council withdraws.
