A Romanian Dutchman who stole 1.6 million euros worth of bottles of wine from a luxury restaurant in Spain has to go to jail for 4.5 years. The 47-year-old man and his girlfriend had, among other things, provided for a unique copy from the early nineteenth century, with an estimated value of 350,000 euros.
At the end of 2021, the man and his 29-year-old Mexican partner, who was sentenced to four years in prison, enjoyed a fourteen-course dinner in the luxury restaurant of a hotel. Then the two were given a tour of the wine cellar, where their eyes fell on the expensive bottles of wine.
The duo had traveled to Spain well prepared. The woman ordered a salad and a dessert for the room in succession that night. This is how she distracted the last employees who were working at night. During that diversion, the man stole a card that allowed him to access the wine cellar.
The man crammed a total of 45 bottles of wine into three bags. The two had put towels in the bags beforehand, so that the glass would not ring during the escape.
The two managed to evade justice for nine months before they were arrested on the border between Montenegro and Croatia.
The bottles are still missing without a trace. The two must pay the hotel more than 750,000 euros in compensation.
