Lazar Samardzic made his choice about the future in national dress and has now decided in favor of Serbia and against the DFB. The 21-year-old has accepted coach Dragan Stojkovic’s invitation, as the Serbian association officially announced. Last November, the professional from Udinese Calcio was in Antonio Di Salvo’s squad for the German U21s.

Samardzic comes from the youth of Hertha BSC and moved to RB Leipzig in the summer of 2020. After only nine appearances with the Saxons, the offensive player went to Italy a year later – with success. At Udinese Calcio, Samardzic is one of the extended regulars this year and has four goals and two assists in 24 games.

He will be able to demonstrate this class in the coming international break with the Serbian team, only formal details such as FIFA approval are still pending according to the press release. The talks between the player and the association have “intensified in the past few weeks.”

As recently as September, Samardzic had denied an imminent change of association. “I hardly bothered with that. I know there are inquiries, but I made it clear that I’m focused on Germany. I still have time to make a final decision, but first of all my thoughts are only for the DFB,” he said at the time on “Spox” and “Goal”. In the 4-2 win against Italy on November 19, he scored in what is likely to be his last appearance in a DFB jersey to make it 2-0.
