Mikhail Ovechkin had to go to the hospital, so his son immediately went to his native country. On Wednesday, he announced on his social network that his father had died at the age of seventy-one.
“I lost my dad today,” read Ovechkin’s post. “Thank you all for your support, but I ask that you understand the situation and do not disturb my family at this time. Thank you.”
No details are known about the death of Ovechkin’s father. Only that the illness he was suffering from did not allow him to visit his son overseas. The lengthy travel was simply a major complication.
The situation surrounding the player himself is also complicated. It is a question of how long he will miss the team. When he flew out on Tuesday, he received the organization’s full support and as much time as needed.
It can be expected that the return to the ice will not be a quick one. The situation is complicated not only by the sad event, but also by the fact that direct flights between North America and Russia are still prohibited.
