“The players are not machines that play tennis”

Within what will be his participation in the Acapulco Open, Matteo Berrettini has launched a message of inspiration for the new generations who see him as a benchmark to follow. The Italian tennis player, 26 years old and current number 24 in the world, acknowledged that since he was little he has found a way to stand out in the “white sport” at home.

“My whole family has played tennis. When I was 4 years old, I didn’t like tennis. I did many sports like swimming, judo. My brother was the one who started playing. One day he told me to try again, I liked him and now I’m here.

I have to thank him”, he commented in reference to Jacopo, who is also playing the ATP 500 in Mexico. “Since I was a child I began to learn what it is to lose so as not to do it anymore.

Defeats have always helped me to be better. You wake up thinking ‘I don’t want to lose again’ and you do better,” she explained. Berrettini insisted that “tennis is not a sprint. It’s a long race.

We are not machines playing tennis. We are human beings and we also have fears and emotions”. The Wimbledon 2021 finalist will debut in Acapulco against the Slovakian Alex Molcan, a match that is expected to be difficult for one of the title candidates.

Another of the players who are in Mexico, the Spanish Feliciano López, explained that “Matteo’s game is perfect because he has the physique, the power, the mentality.”

It should be noted that the Italian’s stop by the AMT is barely the second of the year and the first since he lost in the first round of the first Grand Slam of the season. Up to what round do you see Matteo Berrettini arriving this week at the Acapulco Open 2023?
