The Mérida Tennis Open is left without its two top favorites in the quarterfinals – Yucatan Now

Magda Linette and Sloane Stephens, first seeds of the Mérida Open de Tenis, were eliminated in the quarterfinals
At the Country Club Mérida, the Swedish Rebecca Peterson and the Italian Camila Giorgi offered forceful performances to defeat the top favorites of the tennis tournament, which is being held for the first time in the Yucatecan capital.
The Polish Linette came to the competition with high expectations after being a semifinalist at the Australian Open and appearing in 21st place in the world ranking.
However, she fell in straight sets at 6-2, 6-4 to Peterson, who will now face Catherine McNally in the semifinals on Saturday.

Worse was Stephens, who was not even the shadow of the 2017 United States Open champion, losing 6-0 double with Giorgi.
For her part, the American Catherine McNally defeated the Australian Kimberly Birrell, in two sets, 6-4 and 6-3, to become the first semifinalist.
In doubles, the American Caty McNally and the French Diane Perry beat the Swiss Simona Waltert and the Greek Despina Papamichail 6-4, 7-6 to reach the final.
They will face China’s Xinyu Wang and Taiwan’s Fang-Hsien Wu for the title, who advanced without playing due to the withdrawal of the Georgian Natela Dzalamidze and Russian Kamilla Rakhimova duo.
