Swiss Tennis: Four Swiss tournament wins

As reported by Swiss Tennis, not only Belinda Bencic was able to triumph. Four more titles crowned an extremely successful week in Switzerland.

Two young Swiss professionals celebrated in Tunisia. At the ITF M25 tournament in Monastir, Jakub Paul (ATP 561) celebrated his first individual title in almost a year and a half.

The 23-year-old from Graubünden defeated the Italian Enrico Dalla Valle (ATP 768) in two sets in the final.

At the ITF W15 tournament taking place in the same place at the same time, Leonie Küng, a Swiss woman, was also happy at the end.

The 22-year-old from Schaffhausen won the doubles competition alongside Germany’s Chantal Sauvant.

Successful offspring at the ITF-J60 in Poland

And the Swiss offspring also collected titles diligently last week. At the end of the ITF J60 tournament in Puszczykowo, Poland, Josephine Kunz was the happy winner.

The 16-year-old from Schwyz only had to give up a single set on the way to her first tournament victory on the junior women’s ITF tour.

In the final she defeated the Ukrainian Anastasiya Kolyada with 6:4 and 6:4. Thanks to Timeo Gaillard from Valais and Janis Simmen from Aargau, Switzerland was able to celebrate a second time in Puszczykowo.

The two 16-year-olds prevailed in the doubles final against Poland’s Jan Nowacki and Hubert Plenkiewicz. Timeo Gaillard was also in the singles final, but had to admit defeat to the Finn Otso Martikainen.

Simona Waltert in the Grenoble final

Simona Waltert (WTA 122) also had a successful week. The 22-year-old from Graubünden, who won the Billie Jean King Cup with the Swiss team last November 2022, qualified for the final of the ITF W60 tournament in Grenoble (France).

There, however, she failed in two sets against the top seeded Océane Dodin (WTA 102) from France. At the same tournament, Xenia Knoll reached the semifinals in doubles.

The 30-year-old from Biel just missed making it into the final alongside Magali Kempen (Belgium). Luca Margaroli had a similar experience on the Spanish island of Tenerife.

The 31-year-old from Ticino made it into the semi-finals at the local ATP Challenger together with doubles partner Mikelis Libietis (Latvia). Only in the match tiebreak did the two fail because of Luke Johnson (GBR) and Sem Verbeek (Netherlands).

Oscar Rashed had two final appearances

Oscar Rashed was able to look forward to two finals last week. The 17-year-old from Geneva achieved this at the ITF J30 tournament in Al Zahra (KUW).

After three clear victories, he finally lost in the singles to the Italian Massimo Pizzigoni.

In doubles, Oscar Rashed and 14-year-old Alex Bergomi from Wollerau even made it through to a purely Swiss duo in the final.

However, they were not granted the title either.
