NBA: Stephen Curry runs hot and flies – Poole gamewinner saves Golden State Warriors vs Grizzlies

The next spectacular chapter in the entertaining Warriors-Grizzlies rivalry, Golden State won the crime thriller against Memphis 122-120 thanks to a last-second game winner from Jordan Poole. Previously, Stephen Curry was kicked off the field by the referees.

Golden State Warriors (24-24) – Memphis Grizzlies (31-17) 122:120 (BOXSCORE)

In a way, Poole played his part in that. Curry seemed frustrated with his team-mate’s shot selection and, while running backwards, peppered his mouthguard in the direction of the spectator stands shortly before the end. The referees immediately sent him to take a shower.

Previously, the chef ran hot with 10 of his 34 points (4/8 threes) in the fourth quarter and was a big part of the Dubs’ comeback. Klay Thompson (24, 5/10 threes) also had a hand in the game, but it was completed by Poole, who sunk the layup to win a good second before the final buzzer. He totaled 21 points and 7 assists, while Draymond Green also had 8 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks.

Ja Morant was the best man for the visitors from Memphis, finishing the game with 29 points and 12 assists. They were followed by Desmond Bane (20), Brandon Clarke (19) and Jaren Jackson Jr. (17), but the Big Man also collected six fouls and had to watch crunch time. The Grizzlies have lost four games in a row.

The Warriors had to do without Andrew Wiggins, who was ill, for a short time, but the Dubs stayed with a small starting lineup: Jonathan Kuminga replaced Wiggins alongside Curry, Thompson, Poole and Green. On the other side, Memphis had to do without Steven Adams, the center is even out for three to five weeks due to a cruciate ligament injury.

Warriors vs. Grizzlies: Offensive problems on both sides
The Splash Brothers each conceded two fouls fairly quickly, and in general a lot of fouls were called in the first quarter. A real offensive rhythm could not be seen on either side, both teams even left a few alley-oops, Golden State afforded a lot of ball losses. Memphis scored just over 30 percent in the first quarter, but the Warriors were only 24:22 ahead.

The Dubs continued to be very sloppy with the ball, and by the middle of the second quarter the home side had already lost 13 (!) balls. Meanwhile, Memphis remained ice cold offensively, which, for example, confirmed the three-point ratio of 1/12 at that time. After all, Kuminga gave the Warriors an offensive push with a hammer slam plus a corner three. However, Morant was now in the game (11 in the second quarter), his wild finish late in the first half putting the Grizzlies 54-53.

After the change of sides, it remained the case that neither team was able to pull away decisively. Morant and Bane temporarily gave the Grizzlies a slight advantage, while Curry countered this with a four-point game (96:90 for Memphis after three quarters).

Numerous foul whistles did not allow the game to flow properly, Poole now carried the guests’ second unit, but Jackson Jr. kept the Grizzlies in front. A tip-in from Santi Aldama went as high as +10 midway through the final period before Thompson and Curry responded from downtown. With a 9-2 run thanks to a four-guard lineup with Donte DiVincenzo alongside the usual suspects, Golden State snapped back on with three minutes to go (111-113).

Warriors win wild finish: Poole with Gamewinner

Even more bitter for the Grizzlies: The otherwise good Jackson Jr. had to go off the field with his sixth foul, then Curry sank a long two to equalize. The Grizzlies’ offensive possessions were at times completely uninspired. The momentum was now fully on the dub side, the Chase Center was ready to explode.

The chef put Golden State ahead after a foul in his three-goal attempt, but he was kicked out by the refs with 1:14 to go – for blasting his mouthguard through the air. In keeping with that wild finish, Morant put the Grizzlies ahead again, but then Thompson was there. His three put Golden State ahead with 14 seconds remaining.

And it got even wilder: Morant served Brandon Clarke for the slam after a strong drive – again equalization, still 6 seconds to play. A quick baseline jumper by Thompson landed just ringside, but Golden State got one last chance as the ball bounced wide off the Grizzlies. On the inbounds play, DiVincenzo found Poole with a great pass and cut to the basket while the Grizzlies defense focused on Klay. Poole sunk the layup straight away – victory for the Warriors!

In a way, Poole had something to do with it too. Curry looked frustrated with his teammate’s choice of pitch and threw his gumshield towards the stands on a running back shortly before the end. For this, the referees immediately sent him to the shower.

Previously, the leader had heated with 10 of his 34 points (4/8 from three points) in the fourth quarter and had thus largely contributed to the return of the Dubs. Klay Thompson (24.5/10 three-pointer) also played an important role, but it was Poole who finished the job by scoring the winning layup a good second before the final buzzer. He had 21 points and 7 assists, while Draymond Green had 8 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks.

The Warriors had to give up Andrew Wiggins at short notice, but the Dubs kept a small starting line: Jonathan Kuminga replaced Wiggins alongside Curry, Thompson, Poole and Green. On the other hand, Memphis had to do without Steven Adams, the center having even been absent for three to five weeks due to a cruciate ligament injury.

Numerous fouls called failed to create a real flow of play, with Poole now carrying the visitors’ second unit, however Jackson Jr. continued to keep the Grizzlies in front. A tip-in from Santi Aldama even took the score to +10 midway through the final period, before Thompson and Curry responded from the middle. With a 9:2 thanks to a line of four guards with Donte DiVincenzo alongside the usual suspects, Golden State returned to the charge in the blink of an eye with three minutes remaining (111:113).

Even more bitter for the Grizzlies: Jackson Jr, otherwise very good, had to leave the field for his sixth foul, then Curry returned a long two points to equalize. The Grizzlies’ offensive possessions were partly completely uninspired. The momentum was now totally on the side of the Dubs, the Chase Center was ready to explode.

The chef gave Golden State the lead after a foul on their triple attempt, but was ejected by the referees with 1:14 remaining – for smashing his gumshield. In the process, Morant restored the advantage to the Grizzlies, but it was Thompson who took care of it. His hat-trick gave Golden State the lead with 14 seconds remaining.

And it got even crazier: Morant served Brandon Clarke for the slam after a strong drive – again the tie, 6 seconds left. A quick jump over the base line from Thompson only touched the ring, but Golden State had one last chance as the ball bounced off the Grizzlies’ field. On the entry play, DiVincenzo found Poole clipping the basket with a great pass, while the Grizzlies defense focused on Klay. Poole straight in the layup – Warriors victory!
