Slowdown for the wonder boy: Purdy delays his operation

The cloud in which Brock Purdy lived since his NFL debut vanished with a bang. The quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers chosen in the last position of the last Draft and who became the sensation of the league by achieving eight consecutive wins he was injured in the NFC Championship against the Philadelphia Eagles. In what would be Purdy’s first loss as a starter, the 23-year-old was only able to throw four passes due to a serious elbow injury: he tore the lateral ligament in his right throwing arm.

Knowing his injury, Purdy visited several doctors looking for the best way to recover from the injury. Finally, it was decided that the ‘wonder boy’ of the NFL would have to undergo surgery, a drastic measure that has rarely been resorted to with a quarterback (In fact, the technique purported to apply to Purdy has only ever been used in history with Nick Mullens, who was also a quarterback for the 49ers.) The leave time was about six monthsthus arriving by the hair of the training camp with which the teams start their preseason.

However, a new setback has appeared in Purdy’s recovery. Brock himself confirmed that the operation was going to be carried out on February 22, but the inflammation in the damaged area has prevented Dr. Meister from carrying out the surgical intervention. This delay in the operation, which will be re-evaluated in early March, could jeopardize Purdy’s presence for much of the 49ers’ preseason. According to Tom Pelissero, the San Francisco jewel is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season in the first week of September.

The problems accumulate for Purdy, and it is that he will have to fight for the starting position again. Jimmy Garoppolo will leave the 49ers this summer, but, in principle, Trey Lance will remain, another young quarterback for whom those from the Bay bet very heavily just two years ago. 2022 was to be Lance’s first season as San Francisco’s leader, but a serious ankle injury in Game 2 forced him to miss the entire year. His loss, later linked to that of Garoppolo, was what led to the fairy tale that Purdy lived. Now, the one from Iowa State will have to earn the position, and it won’t be easy if he isn’t able to complete a preseason for which Lance will be available. Return to the starting box.
