“Should never happen like this”: What annoyed Schäfer against Bayern

VfL Wolfsburg actually played a strong home game against FC Bayern, but still lost the game. The fourth goal was crucial.

Complained about the defensive behavior before 1: 4: Marcel Schäfer.

The fact that VfL Wolfsburg were without points after 90 minutes against FC Bayern was difficult for the wolves to accept. “It didn’t feel like the result,” Maximilian Arnold was annoyed at DAZN about the 2: 4 at the end. Patrick Wimmer also saw a game that “we should never have lost”.

And yet it happened, which initially had a lot to do with the record champions. VfL was exposed to the merciless efficiency of the Munich team, after just 19 minutes the home side were 0:3 behind. Even if the goals conceded were too easy, Wolfsburg never gave up and fought their way back into the game. “The team caught on well,” praised Wimmer, who also saw that “we had enough chances.”

22 to nine shots on goal

However, converting their own chances made the difference on Sunday evening. 22:9 shots on goal was the score for Wolfsburg after the final whistle, which, according to Arnold, had been shown “how to score goals”. Especially in the second half, when Wolfsburg played outnumbered, VfL had 100% chances. “We didn’t have the world class of Bayern,” Niko Kovac finally had to admit.

While Arnold & Co. were annoyed about the negligence in front of the goal, managing director Marcel Schäfer especially criticized the goal that made it 4-1. Jamal Musiala successfully completed a remarkable solo run, but was only accompanied by numerous Wolfsburg players over half the place. “We have to be physical and robust, so a fourth goal can never happen,” said Schäfer, who complained that “we had several opportunities to stop Musiala. We didn’t manage to close the middle . That annoyed me the most.”

“I’m not in a panic”

But Wolfsburg didn’t give up after the fourth goal, VfL came back again through Mattias Svanberg and almost came back through Yannick Gerhardt’s retracted goal. “If you just look at the morale of this team, I absolutely take my hat off,” Arnold summed up. The Wolfsburg captain therefore sees his VfL “on the right track. I’m not in a panic”.

Although the wolves have now lost their third competitive game in a row, they can still keep an eye on the international places thanks to the series they have previously put on.
