Salary dispute: Canadian women protest via T-shirt

Canada’s women’s footballers wore purple shirts ahead of Thursday’s international match against the United States in protest at their own federation. The shirts worn by the Olympic champions when the national anthems were played also said “enough is enough”. The team complains that they were not paid last year and that they were not well promoted by the association. The US kickers had fought a similar conflict in recent years.

The US players showed their solidarity and linked arms with their opponents in a large circle before kick-off. After that, they won the game 2-0. The tournament, in which Brazil and Japan also take part, serves to prepare for the World Cup in the summer.

Canada’s players originally wanted to boycott all activities and training, but said they had been threatened with legal consequences by their association and therefore played under protest. Canada meets Brazil in Nashville on Sunday. The Women’s World Championships will take place in Australia and New Zealand from July 20th to August 20th. As Olympic champions, the Canadians are among the title contenders.
