Maria Sakkari pulled off a real feat in the quarterfinals of the WTA Tour 500 event in Doha. The current seventh in the world rankings defeated her colleague Caroline Garcia from France, who was two positions higher, after a fight lasting 2:41 hours 6:2, 6:7 (5), 7:6 (5). In the semi-finals, the Greek now has to play against the second-seeded American Jessica Pegula, who clearly defeated the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia 6;:3, 6:2.
The Russian Vernoika Kudermetova won the first singles match of the day against the 18-year-old Coco Gauff in three rounds 2:04 hours playing time 6:2, 3:6, 6:1. As world number six, the young American was placed fourth in the capital of Qatar. Kudermetova now has to deal with the top seeded Iga Swiatek from Poland, who benefited from Belinda Bencic’s non-appearance.
The Swiss, who won the WTA Tour event in Abu Dhabi (Saudi Arabia) last week, had a hard-fought comeback victory against Belarusian Victoria Azarenka on Wednesday, but was no longer in the quarter-finals able to play her match against the world number one and gave up because of tiredness
