Russia’s figure skater Kostomarov has had both feet amputated

DFormer Russian figure skater Roman Kostomarov has had both feet amputated. As Russian media unanimously report, the Olympic champion from Turin 2006 was hospitalized on January 10 because of acute pneumonia.

As a result, his condition deteriorated rapidly. The doctors found blood poisoning and circulatory disorders during the treatment. Because of the onset of necrosis, the decision was made to amputate the feet to save Kostomarow’s life. His condition is still classified as very serious.

Multiple blood clots

Kostomarov is said to have lost control of his hands, can barely speak, but agreed to having his fingers amputated. The gangrene also led to heart problems. Several blood clots were found.

Kostomarov, who turned 46 on February 8, is currently being fed through a tube. His former partner on the ice, Tatjana Nawka, took to social media to express her wishes for his recovery on his birthday: “I know that you are strong, courageous, pushy, defiant, almighty, with a real athletic and combative character,” Nawka wrote on her Telegram channel. “You never give up! And no matter what happens, under what circumstances, you will always find a way in life. The main thing is to live.”

Between 2004 and 2006, Nawka and Kostomarow won three European and two World Championships together. In 2006, the two finally won Olympic gold at the Winter Games in Turin.
