Raphael Varane Retires from the French National Team

Manchester

Raphael Varane has decided not to play for the French National Team anymore. Varane wants to focus on defending his club Manchester United.

The 2022 World Cup will be Varane’s last tournament with Les Bleus. Varane made six appearances and only missed the opening game against Australia, before being beaten by Argentina in the final.

Varane feels his service to the country is finished. While defending France, Varane has 93 caps and five goals since his debut on March 22, 2013.

Varane has always appeared in major tournaments that France has participated in since the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Then there are Euro 2016 and 2020. His best achievements are of course when he brought France to become world champions in Russia five years ago and also the 2022 UEFA Nations League.

“One of the greatest honors in my life is being able to represent my beloved country for decades. Every time I wear this special blue jersey, I feel pride, great responsibility, always play with heart and want to win,” Varane said in his statement quoted. ESPN.

“I have been thinking about this for several months and I have decided that now is the right time to retire from the national team.”

Thus, Varane is now only focused on MU, the club he has strengthened since 2021 after leaving Real Madrid. Varane may be aware of his physical condition which is starting to be prone to injury.

Despite being only 29 years old, Varane has missed around 26 games over the past two seasons. Moreover, MU is still fighting in four competitions this season so Varane’s physique must be maintained.

Raphael Varane made 18 appearances in all competitions this season.
