For one day, the gambling paradise of Las Vegas should have become a tennis paradise, because on March 5 of this year there was a show fight between the 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal and the up-and-coming top man Carols in the 17,000-seat MGM Grand Garden Arena Alcaraz planned. However, nothing will come of it.
Because the French Open record champion, who suffered hip problems during the Australian Open in January, had to cancel his participation in the large-scale exhibition event. The Mallorcan doesn’t feel ready to play at the absolute top level again and said: “It makes me very sad that I can’t come to Vegas and take part in this great event with Carlos at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. “
Big question mark behind Indian Wells and Miami
Unfortunately, the recovery plan doesn’t allow Nadal to be present and ready to play. But he is sure that another date will be found when the duel in the US state of Nevada can be made up for. The US fans don’t have to do without the event entirely, but either Taylor Fritz or Frances Tiafoe will take the place of the “Bull from Manacors” – the two US stars will play the duel with the US Open champion of 2022 beforehand among themselves.
After Nadal’s cancellation, there is also a big question mark regarding the participation of the ex-world number one in the two ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami. The combined event in the Californian desert seems to be a little too close to the planned exhibition – the first games of the main competition of the BNP Paribas Open should already take place on March 8th.
