Carson Wentz was released by the Commanders after one season on Monday. But an NFL team will be desperate enough to chase after him.

With NFL teams clearing their salary caps ahead of the start of NFL free agency and with the NFL Combine looming at the end of this week in Indianapolis, the Washington Commanders had no problem making what they should have done. In addition to cornerback Bobby McCain, the organization also released quarterback Carson Wentz after his only season in the nation’s capital.

The move was expected after the former overall No. 2 was benched by Washington mid-season. However, it is more interesting to consider its future. With his lack of performance, questionable leadership abilities and apparent refusal to be a safe replacement, how many options does he have?

More importantly, the better question would be which NFL teams would be desperate enough to sign him this offseason? Desperation may not be the only motivating factor, but there is a world in which these teams could be landing spots for Carson Wentz.

NFL Rumors: 3 drop points for Carson Wentz with desperate teams.

3. Carson Wentz could start to look attractive to the Buccaneers.

When you’re looking for a Kyle Trask to start NFL games, a team can be ready to do anything.

Although Bruce Arians and several members of the Buccaneers organization have publicly expressed their support for the former second-round pick from Florida, anyone who has watched Trask’s tape will tell you that the odds of him actually succeeding at the helm. an NFL offense fall somewhere between thin and nil, with a penchant for seconds.

That means the Bucs are likely to bring in a veteran at some point in the offseason and, given the expected softness of the market around Wentz and Tampa Bay’s cap issues, maybe that’s it. something that would be appealing to the franchise.

Wentz’s arrival would give them the chance to see what they have in Trask, as they won’t feel pressured to play a free veteran, but they can also put Wentz in the field if (when?) Trask fails and still have a marginally functional attack.

All this to say that Wentz would be a great stopgap before Caleb Williams or Drake Maye joins the franchise.
