Alexander Zverev suffered the next setback on his way to old strength.
At the ATP tournament in Rotterdam, Germany’s best tennis professional lost to Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 6: 4, 3: 6, 4: 6 and was eliminated in the round of 16. The 25-year-old from Hamburg has only won two more matches on the ATP tour this year.
A day after his solid success against South Korean Kwon Soon Woo, Zverev initially put in a decent performance again and won the first set after 42 minutes. At the beginning of the second section, the Olympic champion then allowed himself a small phase of weakness and promptly conceded a break.
In addition, Zverev struggled with neck problems from the middle of the second set and had to be treated. Local hero Griekspoor equalized the set after 1:18 hours.
Doha is next waiting
In the third set, Zverev was unable to use three break chances when the score was 2: 1. Instead, he gave up his service a little later with a double fault and had to admit defeat against the hard serving Griekspoor after 2:02 hours. For Zverev, who clearly noticed the lack of match practice, the tournament in Doha will continue next week.
