Mathias Wyngaert (RC Gent) after 2-3 defeat against SC Dikkelvenne: “Point deserved based on our second half” | Sports nearby

RC Gent has failed to remain undefeated for the fifteenth time in a row. The Ratjes made up for a deficit twice, but Dennis Van Vaerenbergh had the last word in the final match. Goalkeeper Mathias Wyngaert replaced the shoulder-injured Bryan Londot. He was disappointed after the 2-3 defeat.

“You know in advance that you are facing a difficult match. Lars Cooman and Samuel Davies were out and then you still get a team at the kick-off that lacked some rhythm. Our first half was not good. Substandard self. Not one player, but all players actually and Dikkelvenne’s 0-1 lead was actually nothing to argue with. It is also painful when you conced a goal after just one minute and ten seconds. We knew at half-time that we had something to make up for.”

Penalty kicks

In the second half, the Ratjes were able to reverse a deficit twice. Wyngaert saw his team play a lot better football after the break. “Based on the second half, I think we deserved a point. We balanced and were certainly menacing. After an error on Niels Enow, Joran Triest was able to equalize from the spot. Everything was redone for ten minutes and we again faced a deficit. But after a pushing error in the box, Triest was allowed to take another penalty kick. Maybe we made the mistake of being a little too greedy and hoping too much to get the three points after all. It was also a bit sour because we had the feeling that Dikkelvenne’s third goal was preceded by a pushing error.”

Top five

Wyngaert was disappointed, but keeps ogling the teams above Ghent. “That strong series proves that we deserve our place in the sub-top. After that defeat against Dikkelvenne, the ambition should certainly not be adjusted. We are still going for the top five.”
