Lorenzo Musetti continues to search for meaning · tennisnet.com

The tournament in Rio de Janeiro is already over for Lorenzo Musetti. The Italian was clearly defeated by Nicholas Jarry there earlier in the week. Only recently, the third-placed lawmaker in Brazil spoke about his mental problems – but apparently this step did not really free him.

For a while, Lorenzo Musetti was considered the epitome of the Italian upswing on the ATP tour. Musetti was considered the future top protagonist of the professional tour. The 20-year-old was already so strong in his youth that not only Italian experts had him on the list for the top. No. 1 in the youth world rankings, junior winner at the Australian Open. But the results also matched his style of play: A one-handed backhand, which is based on those of Stan Wawrinka or Richard Gasquet in terms of effectiveness and beauty. Good footwork. And his multi-faceted game. In 2022 he made a big statement with his victory at the tournament in Hamburg, where he defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

Early defeats in South America

But it remains with such selective exclamation marks. Musetti cannot establish himself at the top in the long run. The Italian recently spoke about possible reasons.

A few days ago, ESPN commented on mental stress in professional tennis. “Tennis is a sport that demands a lot,” said the Italian. “There is a lot of pressure. It’s not easy to stand alone on the court and deal with all the problems. Sometimes the pressure was too much for me. But I’m working hard with a specialist that this doesn’t happen again.”

But his statements did not really free him. In Rio de Janeiro, placed third, he clearly lost his first appearance against Nicolas Jarry 2:6, 2:6. A week earlier he lost to world No. 101 Juan-Pablo Varillas 4-6, 4-6 in Buenos Aires.

A glimmer of hope for Musetti fans: If he stays true to his previous professional career, a real sporting exclamation point should soon follow.
