Klopp after Liverpool – Real Madrid: ‘We played their game’

Jürgen Klopp attempted to explain Liverpool’s 2-5 rout of Real Madrid on Tuesday night at Anfield in the Champions League round of 16 first leg at BT Sport.

The start was excellent. It was exactly us, the way we want to play, we were giving them problems all over the pitch, we read the game well, a super intensive start. We led 2-0. I thought the whole first half was good, apart from the goals (conceded). But we became a little more passive, already quite high on the pitch, we no longer pressed when we had to because if we become passive against this team, we are punished. The way we defended (on the third goal) was obviously not acceptable and after it was 3-2, it doesn’t help against a team that is so excellent on the counterattack. We ended up playing their game and we couldn’t find the thread. They have become more confident. It’s a weird game, but we lost 5-2 and there are a lot of things to take away from this game“.
