Islam Slimani arrived in Anderlecht surrounded by high expectations, but also uncertainty. The top scorer in the history of Algerian football has the image of a last-minute transfer. But Karim Belhocine reassures: Slimani will be at the level.
Islam Slimani signed for RSC Anderlecht to everyone’s surprise, but Karim Belhocine is very happy with the arrival of the Fennecs top scorer in Belgium. “He’s an excellent player and above all a man that I appreciate,” said the former Mauves coach. “At the time, we played against his team with Anderlecht, and he gave me his jersey without me even asking him. He’s an extraordinary guy, and above all, a hard worker”.
Belhocine is therefore certain that Slimani, despite the criticism, will succeed. “He is seen as a ‘plan B’? Perfect, really (laughs). Keep seeing him as a plan B, let’s laugh,” says the Franco-Algerian. “Of course, I understand the doubts. But Slimani is not just anyone, he is a great striker. And above all: an Algerian is never as strong as when you doubt him. The more you will doubt of Slimani, the more he wants to prove you wrong”.
A mentality that is common to all Algerians. “It always takes time to adapt, but once it’s over, the Algerian footballer has a lot to offer. I knew Khadri, Messaoudi in Kortrijk, and before that Guedioura, Dahmane, myself of course. ..we have this state of mind”, declares Belhocine. RSCA supporters of course hope he is right.
