The Dutch cabinet has managed to put Russian President Putin in a very difficult position. The Netherlands demands that Russia immediately withdraw from Ukraine, otherwise Russian athletes will not be welcome at the Olympic Games.
According to Rutte, the Olympic Games are the perfect leverage to force Putin to surrender. “In this way we checkmate Putin in one move,” says Prime Minister Rutte. “Russia had completely failed to take into account that the war in Ukraine could cost participation in the Olympic Games. This must be a nightmare for Putin.”
The Olympic Games will take place next year in the French capital Paris. “So time is running out for Russia,” warns Rutte. “As yet, we do not see any Russian troops withdrawing. In fact, they have just started a new offensive. But I suppose the Kremlin is now in feverish meetings. I think an ultimatum should be given. If Russia does not completely withdraw from Ukraine within two weeks, then they can write the Olympics on their stomachs. Yes, that sounds harsh, but I think it’s the only way to bring Putin to his knees.”
