Goalkeeper saves penalty and dies

EA 25-year-old goalkeeper collapsed and died during a football match in a Belgian amateur league. The player from the KVC Sint-Eloois-Winkel Sport club only saved a penalty on Saturday and collapsed on the field immediately afterwards, the public broadcaster VRT reported.

The game was immediately interrupted. Attempts by paramedics to revive the man failed, it said. The 25-year-old was taken to the hospital and died. Details of the cause of death were not initially known.

“Is incomprehensible”

“We are all very depressed,” said the deceased goalkeeper’s team to the online portal “ostbelgiendirekt.be”. “He has played with us since he was young and was particularly popular with everyone. It is incomprehensible that something like this could happen to such a young man.”

The football club expressed its deepest condolences to the man’s family and friends on its website. “Football is secondary,” the statement said.

According to VRT, around 1,000 people gathered in Sint-Eloois-Winkel on Monday evening for a funeral march to commemorate the man. People put flowers in the goal at the soccer field.
