Former NFL player Vontae Davis faces drunk driving charges in Florida

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A former NFL player was arrested on misdemeanor DUI after deputies said his vehicle rear-ended a pickup truck that was on the side of a South Florida highway. due to a flat tire, injuring the driver who had been standing outside.

Vontae Davis34, allegedly smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and red eyes and could barely stay awake while being interviewed by a police officer after the crash early Saturday on the Florida Turnpike in Hollywood, Florida, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to cops, Davis lost control of his Tesla sedan and collided with the van parked on the side of the turnpike. The impact of the collision caused the van to roll into a concrete barrier and struck its driver, who had been waiting outside. The driver was taken to a hospital with multiple injuries, according to the report.

Davis refused to provide a blood or urine sample and would not agree to a field sobriety test, according to the report. He told the policeman that he had had two drinks at a club.

No attorney for Davis was listed in an online court filing.

Davis is perhaps best known for announcing his retirement in 2018 in the middle of a game between his team at the time, the Buffalo Bills, and the Los Angeles Chargers. Davis, a cornerback who was selected to two Pro Bowls during his career, also played for the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins.
